MN Humane - 19 Wolves To Be Killed

The Situation

We received a phone call in the late afternoon of the 24th from Keith Streff from the AHS Humane Society in Minnesota.  He informed us of a group of wolves or wolf-dogs that needed to be confiscated due the owner/caretakers death.  He indicated that there were about 20 of them and they were in pretty bad shape due to neglect.  He also informed us that the only help they could provide, to accomplish this, would be to transport the animals to our location.  He also indicated that he would need to know very quickly whether or not we could accept them, but believed that there was no one who could accommodate his needs.

When I asked him how he heard about Wolf, he was somewhat reluctant to answer and then said, “it could have been from the Wisconsin DNR.”  It turns out that these animals were actually located in Wisconsin, close to the border with Minnesota.  He had been asked to take care of this situation by the Sheriff’s department in that Wisconsin county.  We informed Keith that we would let him know if we could accomplish this rescue.

The emails went out to solicit help for this situation and as we waited for responses the next morning we received an email from Keith stating that he needed to know by 11 am if we were going to take them or not.  We had brainstormed a number of approaches that could work, but all of them were very expensive, extremely time-consuming and very labor intensive.

Some how we would get this done.  We informed Keith that we would accept the animals.  His response was somewhat confusing as he seemed to be reneging on his offer of transport and suddenly was indicating that there could be as many as 30 animals.  We reiterated our commitment to take the animals and Keith said he would give us a call back as soon as he had more information about the animals.

We received no calls from Keith on the 25th.  We were emailed a copy of a news article on the morning of the 26th about the situation (link copied below).  We placed a call to Keith early this morning and have not received a return call yet.  We finally were able to contact Cathy Johnson at the Humane Society and have straightened everything out.  The animals will be shipped to Colorado on Tuesday or Wednesday of this coming week.  We will keep you updated as we find out the condition of these animals.

What Wolf Is Trying To Accomplish

We are in emergency mode at The Sanctuary and are securing materials to build temporary enclosures for these animals that would be approximately 20’ x 35’.  Additionally, as our county has limited how many animals we can have at The Sanctuary, this would all have to be done at a remote location and once healthy, the animals would have to be placed.  We would then leave the temporary enclosures at that site for use as an evacuation location, in case of wildfire.

We need your help to accomplish this rescue.  Both financial and labor resources will be stretched to the maximum, in order to accommodate these animals.  If you are located in the Northern Colorado area and can help with fence building on Saturday the 27th or Sunday the 28th, please contact me ASAP at fwendland@wolfsanctuary.net.  If you can afford even a donation of $1.00, it will help.  You can send it via our web site by hitting the “Help A Wolf” link in the right column or send it to our USPS address:

          La Porte, CO 80535

THANK YOU!

We Need Your Help

It appears that the Humane Society in Minnesota has received approximately $24,000 in donations for the care of these animals.  It further appears that they have no intention of forwarding the amount above their actual expenses to Wolf.

As we progress with their medical evaluations, treatments, spays and neuters, the bills will increase rapidly.  Current expenditures to build their new enclosures have exceeded $14,000 based on preliminary calculations.

We need your help to proceed as planned.  Our financial resources will be stretched to the maximum, in order to accommodate these animals appropriately.

If you can afford even a donation of $1.00, it will help.  You can send it via our web site at this link:

or send it to our USPS address:

          Post Office Box 1544

          La Porte, CO 80535

THANK YOU!

Dells Wolf - Is No News Really Good News?

We spoke with Adrian Wydeven (WI DNR) this morning.  He reported to us that that they had over 2 dozen modified leg hold traps set and the wolf isn't being fooled.  He also said there have been no sightings or predation.  I am not sure if we are getting the facts here or not.

We are trying to get an activist group in WI to monitor this situation.
