(see details below)

Phase One - Emergency Help To The Animals

‘Rocky Mountain Rescue’ to the Rescue

The back country search & rescue group (Rocky Mountain Rescue Group) responded to our pleas for snowmobile transport to the animals. The group assembled Tuesday along with a number of staff & volunteers from Wolf at the entrance to the access road to WideAwake. Machines were unloaded form trailers, supplies and people were loaded up and the group was off to the facility.

Emergency Teams & Supplies Get In

The expertise and the compassion of this group was outstanding. They drove through large drifts in the road without a problem and were able to get our volunteers and supplies into the Sanctuary without a hitch. Phase one was well underway. Over 800 lbs of meat, 12 cases of dog food, animal medications, 8 volunteers, a snow blower, hand tools for snow removal and the Channel 7 News Reporter and camera were all ferried in without incident.

The volunteers now would continue the tasks involved with phase one — getting the wolves and the facility ready for the next storm, which is supposed to arrive on Thursday. Animals were fed, excessive amounts of snow around feeders and water buckets was being removed and the plans developed on what would have to be accomplished before Thursday.

Phase Two - Make The Road Accessible By Car

The Snow Piled High Along The Road

One Of The Snowmobiles
Arriving At WideAwake

Blowing The Road

We have hired an individual with a front-end loader, equipped with a large snow-throwing attachment. He is beginning the process of getting as much of the loose snow as possible blown from the surface of the road and over the top of the piles of snow along the side of the road. He will also try to move some of the larger piles away from the shoulders.
We will be re-evaluating the status of the road after this process has been completed.

Heavy Equipment May Still Be Needed

There is some serious concerns that there will still be a significant amount of packed/icy snow on the road, which will have to be removed. It might also be necessary to move more of the piles away from the sides of the road in order to return it to a situation where the equipment at WideAwake will be able to deal with any new snow coming in on Thursday.
If anyone has or knows of individuals who might be able to help with the heavy equipment or might have some other ideas, please call:

Frank or Pat Wendland
