October
27th marked the second 'Run With the Wolves' at City Park in Fort Collins.
The morning started out with a cold drizzle, but by the start of the race
it stopped and by the end of the race the sun was coming out. Over three
hundred brave runners and walkers made the trek around the park and through
the cemetery to complete the 4K event.
Before the
start of the race runners and spectators mingled with the six ambassador
animals from Wolf (Nanook, Mesa, Sara, Merlin,
Xavier and Shaka). They also had a chance to visit the information booths
setup by Defenders of Wildlife, PetCo, Sinapu (Colorado Wolf Reintroduction),
PetsMart and Wolf.
The run began
promptly at 9:30 and believe it or not the first runners were crossing
the finish line 12 minutes later. As the final walkers made it around
the course the judges were deciding the winners of the costume contest.
The crowds were also being entertained by "The Altered Egos"
and music provided by Clear Channel Communications -- "The Bear"
107.9 fm. Run officials also tabulated the ten highest pledge raisers
who would receive the outstanding awards, provided by the Wal-Mart Distribution
Center, worth over $2,400.
Attendance
was slightly down from 2001, which we attribute to the weather in the
early morning hours. In spite of this we actually netted more profit from
the event which was very timely as we spent it all on Artemis who required
extensive treatment at the CSU Vet Hospital. (see Letter
from The President - page 2).
We encourage
anyone who registered for the race and could not attend to call us in
order to receive their race shirt. Also anyone who did not register and
is interested in a shirt to call -- we have a surplus to sell at $ 10.00
each. Thank you
to all the volunteers who made this event fun and a success.
