Wolves Are People Too
Anyone who has been the guardian for more than one pet knows that their animals have distinct personalities. We routinely are asked about the behavioral characteristics of wolves and wolf-dogs. Our answer is always the same -- “there are as many variations in their personalities and behaviors as there are in human personalities and behaviors.”
When we get to know these animals intimately and with an open mind, we can see and appreciate just how different each one is. This concept is the premise for the existence of Wolf -- each one is unique, each one is special, each one deserves the best life we can provide. Even the ones we cannot accept at the sanctuary deserve nothing less. |

| As we interact with the sanctuary residents on a daily basis, we see emotions in them that rival or exceed those of humans and are, without a doubt, sincere. We see humor that is pure, delightful and without embarrassment. We see tenderness that brings us to tears. We see irritation build into quick reprimands that seem more appropriate than how most humans respond in similar situations. We see exaltation in the small things that most humans take for granted. |
| We see teasing and playfulness that suggests just how intelligent they really are. We see dramatic bonding that would appear to be love in its purest form. We see compassion for a sick pack mate that exemplifies their highly-evolved social structure. We see grieving that can only be described as spiritual. |

We have also seen some amazing interactions between wolves and humans. We have seen them sense dis-ease in a human, whether physical or emotional and respond with something that can only be described as a healing or comforting power.
As we contemplate what all of this really means, we remember that wolves have had a lot longer refinement period than humans. Scientists believe that wolves have pretty much been the same physically for about 60 to 80 million years. They also have ranged over more of this planet than any other land animal. These facts would testify to how long they have been refining all of these traits, which have made them so successful.
We have been lucky enough to catch some of these emotional moments in photos. We are presenting them here for you in the hopes that you will get a glimpse into the souls of these animals. We hope you enjoy them.
