Sabastian's New Challenges

One of our volunteers noticed a small amount of blood on Sabe’s mouth and chest. When we went to check on him it was believed that somehow he had broken a tooth and had developed an abscess. We contacted Dr. Peter Emily, a renowned Oral Surgeon, who had volunteered his expertise should we ever need a Dentist for the wolves.

An appointment was made for October 17, 2005 for Sabastian to have his surgery performed. To move Sabe we had to tranquilize him by darting. He traveled very well to Deer Creek Animal Hospital. Dr. Emily and Dr. Lee, along with staff prepared Sabe for X-Rays. Something was wrong.

The news was not good. As the Doctor had suspected, the X-rays showed a very large tumor involving Sabastian’s entire lower jaw. What we had believed was an abscess was in actuality Osteosarcoma. -- Bone Cancer. If we never hear the words “there is nothing we can do” ever again in our lives, it will still be once too many.

Sabe is home with us at Wolf, where he will remain
while we care for him. He is still acting as he always
has and does not appear to be in pain. We will keep you posted.
