Last year brought new and exciting challenges on top of all of the normal challenges the sanctuary business already supplies. The addition of Tsunamis and Hurricanes fatigued even the most ardent of charitable givers. The ramifications of which were felt throughout the animal welfare community. Although the large organizations, directly involved in rescue efforts, had record highs in giving, the small guys, like Wolf, struggled to even pay the bills. Your response to our plea at the end of the year, on this issue, was phenomenal and helped us stay in the black. We appreciate your understanding and your generosity. Although we are still not up to par, we believe that with your help, we will be back on track in no time at all.

We were also challenged by radical increases in our insurance premiums and significant expense for medical treatment. We believe the insurance carriers are responding to situations like the Sigfried and Roy experience. The higher medical expenses are due to having a much larger population of geriatric wolves. We hope to have finalized figures for you in the next newsletter.

Even with these limitations:
Wolf participated in over 170 educational programs or public events,
Wolf assisted with the rescue and placement of over 250 homeless animals,
Wolf maintained the well-being of 35 animals at the sanctuary
and 10 animals in foster homes,
Wolf built a new foster-care 1/3 of an acre enclosure,
Wolf expanded 6 enclosures at the sanctuary,
Wolf responded to over 3600 web and phone inquiries for help,
Wolf provided in-depth assistance on wolf sanctuary standards to
           The Association of Sanctuaries and
Wolf donated over $2500 worth of supplies and food for Katrina relief.

We wish we could acknowledge every supporter of Wolf here, but space is prohibitive.

Volunteer Spotlight
Sharon Lyons-Sharp

Sharon first met the wolves at an educational program in Estes Park over five years ago and has been a Wolf Volunteer ever since.

Sharon works full-time plus, as an underwriter for Wells Fargo, therefore her leisure time is very important to her -- trying to balance her weekends with her own family, pets and Wolf. Somehow, Sharon always finds the time to either help out at the Sanctuary, at a public event tabling or an educational program. As most of you know, Wolf sells wolf-related merchandise to help care for the animals. Sharon is one of the members of a core group of volunteers who are always available to help with our retail merchandise at Wolf fundraisers like the Howl-O-Ween Run.

Sharon has also volunteered for the most difficult of tasks -- drumming up donations of items for our auction at the Waltz and being on the committee to help organize that event. She has been outstanding at finding wonderful merchandise for the auction.

Sharon, because of her love for each individual animal at Wolf, is always available to sit with a sick animal, holding a paw or stroking their head, comforting them. One of the most difficult parts of volunteering at Wolf is having an animal pass. Sharon’s quiet strength is a blessing to animal and human alike.

Her dedication to the animals and her hard work in the many aspects of Wolf, earned Sharon the “Spirit of Wolf” Award in 2005. On behalf of the animals of Wolf, thank you for all of your efforts and caring.
