8th
Annual Howl-O-Ween
Run With The Wolves
|
| |
|
The 8th Annual Howl-O-Ween Run was quite an adventure this year. Due to decreasing attendance on Sundays, we decided to move the Run to a Saturday in hopes that was a better day for people. To do that, we also had to move the location, as we could not use City Park on Saturdays. So we rented the Colorado State University Oval, six months in advance, which is a perfect spot for a run. Planning the event was going very well considering the changes. Wolf is very fortunate to live in a community that is very supportive of their local non-profits, and our volunteers are
p-awesome. This year was going to be great!

At 11 am on Thursday, less than 48 hours before the event, we received a call from CSU informing us we were not going to be able to use the Oval. There was a “major” unexpected event occurring on Sunday, and they needed to prepare the Oval all weekend. We later learned the change was due to Barack Obama’s speech there. After recovering from near fatal shock, we went into emergency mode to get the event restructured. Our first call was made to John Lonsdale with Foot of the Rockies and Runlimited Timing and Scoring, who manages our race. John was the saving grace to this situation. He also went into emergency mode, immediately going over to CSU. Within a few hours, he had a new location suitable for the event, and a brand new race course. He contacted all of the necessary people to get approval for the changes, including the rail road, who kindly did not run trains during our event! Without John, there would have been no run this year. Thank you John!

While he was busy in town, staff began notifying all the appropriate authorities, volunteers, vendors and participants of the changes. All in all, we made over 250 phone calls and sent out 5000+ emails in a massive effort to keep the event going. This was all in addition to the regular last minute details, which kept everyone up for most of 2 nights. Everyone was extremely understanding and accommodating of the changes, including all the delivery drivers who were certainly very inconvenienced. Unfortunately, no police officers were available to man the new course, so John had to once again re-route the course Friday evening.

We arrived at the CSU Jack Christiansen Memorial Track at 5:30 am on Saturday, in bitter cold and complete darkness with no clue where to set up. Wolf volunteers rocked though, and designed and set up the entire event in record time. Thankfully the weather could not have been better once the participants began arriving at 8 am. The rest of the event went off without a hitch, everyone had a great time, and a few celebratory beers after the event. Who knew it was possible to redesign an event in less than 2 days?
Participation was way up, and there were more canines present than ever before. Over 200 people ran this brand new course through campus. Wolf would like to thank and congratulate everyone who participated! Awards were given to the top 3 runners in each race category, as well as the 3 fastest dogs.

After runners, the judges had a very hard time determining the winners of the costume contest. All the costumes were fantastic. We would have given a prize to everyone had we been able to. After some tough deliberations, the following canines and humans were awarded best:
|
Skittle Zaik (as fish on a pole) |
|
Bo Case (as a pirate) |
|
Doyle Harrison (as a frog prince) |
|
Amanda/Kaylynn Pardue (as chicks) |
|
Ryan Green (as Obi Wan) |
|
Genesis Delacruz (as a dinosaur) |
|
Trey Lindenfeld (as a pirate) |
|
Sally/Phil Hutchinson (as ANWR and Driller) |

Finally, our top pledge raisers were announced, and allowed to pick from an array of ‘sweet’ prizes. Pledges were outstanding this year! Thank you to all who collected pledges and donated in these tough times. The top raisers were:

...to all our wonderful sponsors (click

for another successful event directly benefitting our furry
Sanctuary residents. We especially appreciate the huge workload
Cathy Clark
took on for the event. Her extra efforts allowed the event coordinators
(Kiley & Brandy) to keep their sanity! We look forward to
seeing everyone at the Run again next year! |
