Letter From The PresidentLetter From The President

The change in season and change in weather patterns, we have received, has been an amazing blessing. Around the time of our last newsletter, we were bracing for what looked to be one of the worst wildfire seasons we had ever seen around the Sanctuary, but that all took a very dramatic change. The Sanctuary has been receiving a wonderful amount of moisture! The streams are flowing, the Sanctuary's pond is full, the grasses are turning green and the wildflowers should be in bloom any day now.

Our wildfire scare with the Crystal Fire has again pushed our desire to raise the fire safety level for the wolves. Wildfires can make an appearance in a number of different ways. The worst case scenario is a wildfire that starts and grows so quickly, or shifts directions unexpectedly, giving little to no time before the fire is at your doorstep. But even in those kinds of situations, there are measures that can be taken for the protection of the animals. See the next page for more information on this project.

The Waltz is quickly approaching. We are all looking forward to a successful event and a great evening of entertainment too! I want to extend a special Thank You to all of our outstanding, dedicated volunteers who have put in hundreds of hours collecting auction items and dealing with the 1,001 other things that go into making the Waltz such a perfect event. Without all of you, we just couldn't do it!

Thank you all for your continued love for the animals, without supporters like you, we couldn't do it!

Thank You Offer!

Wolf is very proud that almost all of our funding comes from ‘grass roots’ support.  It is testimony to the passion you possess for the wolves.  However, that base is impacted during hard economic times.  We know that you are suffering as much as we are, and we truly appreciate your donation, no matter what size.

Knowing the sacrifice we are asking of you, we have again initiated a special offer to acknowledge your extra efforts and thank you for all you have already done.

With any donation of $10 or more,
we will send you an ‘Akyra’ bookmark.

This past quarter has been a busy one. The entire winter season had been very dry, with the least amount of snowfall we have seen in a very long time. It was looking to be a very dangerous wildfire season and then the Crystal Fire hit, far too close for comfort. (see page 2). Shortly after the Crystal Fire was put out, the weather took a dramatic change. Since then we have received over 11" of rain and 20" of snowfall! Thank You to to all of our supporters who did what they could to send moisture our way, it has worked!

With the change in season the first hummingbird was spotted at the Sanctuary on May 5th. Wolf gets an amazing number of hummingbirds who return to the Sanctuary every year. They are greatly enjoyed by staff, visitors and volunteers. A couple of days before that, we had a skunk spend the day in a half sheltered area by our main gate. This was not so greatly enjoyed by staff, visitors and volunteers. Skunks are nocturnal animals, so he thought he found a nice place to sleep through the day and refused to be chased away. He left the next night and has thankfully not returned.

Kawa, the blue eyed beauty pictured above, made a trip to see the dentist. He is a foster care wolf-dog who lives with our computer administrator near Black Hawk. Kawa went in to see Dr. Peter Emily and the folks at Deer Creek Animal Hospital to have an abscess checked out. He came home after receiving four root canals and one extraction. He has made a wonderful recovery and thanks to the root canals, Kawa got to keep his carnassial teeth. Thank You Dr. Emily and the folks at DCAH for donating their services.

The Sanctuary was blessed to have several work groups take care of a number of large projects. Several groups from CSU, including the Triangle Fraternity and CSUnity came to Wolf to lend a hand. OtterCares/OtterBox also donated an outstanding amount of volunteer work. Thank You for helping the wolves and making a difference.

Everyone at the Sanctuary is now in full swing preparing for the upcoming Waltz for the Wolves. We are thrilled to see our largest fund raiser of the year continue to grow with each event. Many local, as well as not-so-local, businesses and individuals have donated a wonderful array of auction items and a generous amount of sponsorships.

We are hopeful this will be the best attended Waltz in our seven year history of this great event. This newsletter went to press before the event, but may not reach you until after the event. Look for full details on the Waltz in our next issue!
